Iraq: it was a war crime from Day One

For the benefit of Dan, and anyone else who is in any doubt, the attack on Iraq  - not just Abu Ghraib, Fallujah, Haditha, Guantanamo, or any other specific case - is a war crime as defined by the Nuremberg Tribunals, as I pointed out back in March:

In particular, Principle VI defines a war of aggression as a crime against peace:

 ”(i) Planning, preparation, initiation or waging of a war of aggression or a war in violation of international treaties, agreements or assurances;
(ii) Participation in a common plan or conspiracy for the accomplishment of any of the acts mentioned under (i).”

Now, we know that there was no link between Saddam and al-Qaeda; that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Saddam’s Iraq; and that the invasion went ahead in contravention of UN resolutions.  So, by the standards your government and mine set at Nuremberg, the invasion of Iraq and all that follows from it constitute a war crime.
