Because our government has little to no understanding of our enemies, because they have little concept of what the people are fighting for or why, they have almost zero understanding of how to accomplish the REAL victory of the war on terror — which is the eradication of all terrorists. Unfortunately, that is not a possibility. Even if we “win” in Iraq and manage to get a substantial number of militants out of Iraq, they will simply move on to someplace else where we can not reach them.
If we can not succeed in removing all terrorists, then what is the victory we are seeking? It was my thought that we would be training the Iraqi leadership and military to protect themselves against the problems we created for them. (Some liberating mission, eh?) It seems to me like over the next 16 months, someone should be focusing on accomplishing that goal rather than continuing to drag American soldiers around the world so a bunch of grown men can play war in an oversized sandbox.
