If you can’t get your kids to eat vegetables, why is it my job?

Jim Skinner, CEO of McDonald’s, in SmartMoney. (via boutofcontext) (via hilker)

With all due respect, the fact that this quote has been reblogged 45 times, mostly without comment or criticism, makes me want to switch off the internet and lock the rebloggers in a library for a week.

First, noone ever claimed that it was the job of the McDonald’s CEO to get kids to eat vegetables (although its latest UK ad campaign seems to suggest otherwise). But at the risk of stating the blindingly obvious, McDonald’s uses its market power and dominant share of the public space, and spends millions on psychologists, advertising creatives and promotional tie-ins, to lure children and - crucially - their parents to eat their fatty products.  That situation - which McDonald’s, not the parents to whom he addresses his quip, created - makes him accountable, if not responsible.  In short, he made it his job.
